It is with great sadness we report the death of Charlie Staff who died on the 26th January after being taken to hospital the previous week and was diagnosed with lung cancer.
Charlie joined the Wigmore in 1952 and was soon competing in time trials, road races and grass track events. He became one of Kent’s top short distance racers and was the first club member to beat the hour at 25 miles, recording a time of 59m 58s in 1956.
Thirty one years later he rode his fastest 25 mile T.T. finishing with a time of 57m 34s. He was club 25 mile Champion 9 times.
His proudest achievements were on the Isle of Man; In 1955 he finished 2nd in the 40 mile Onchan Cup Road Race and led the Wigmore to the 1st team prize. The following year he was again 2nd this time in the 37.75 mile Mannin Veg Road Race, which was one lap of the famous motor bike circuit.
During the past few years although suffering with poor eye sight, he still managed to get out twice a week stoking a tandem with club mate Mo Jury on the front.
He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Our condolences go out to his widow Ann and all his family.
